General information
- Engine control module (ECM) incorporates self-diagnosis function.
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will illuminate if certain faults are recorded.
- ECM operates in backup mode if sensors fail, to enable vehicle to be driven to workshop.
- Trouble codes can be displayed using a voltmeter connected to the data link connector (DLC) [3].
Accessing
Ensure ignition switched OFF.
Access data link connector (DLC) [1] Mighty Max Pickup, or [2] Montero.
Connect analogue type voltmeter between data link connector (DLC) terminals 1 and 12 [3].
Switch ignition ON.
Count voltmeter needle deflections and compare with trouble code table.
Trouble codes will be displayed by voltmeter deflections of 1.5 seconds, indicating ‘TENS’ [4] (A], followed by voltmeter deflections of 0.5 seconds, indicating ‘UNITS’ [4] [D].
A 0.5 second pause separates each deflection [4] [B].
A 2 second pause separates ‘TENS’ and ‘UNITS’ [4] [C].
A 3 second pause separates each trouble code [4] [E].
For example: Voltmeter deflects for 1.5 seconds twice, followed by deflections of 0.5 seconds
twice, indicates trouble code 22 [4].
Switch ignition OFF.
Disconnect voltmeter.
NOTE: If a constant deflection is displayed, suspect engine control module (ECM) fault.
NOTE: If constant short pulses are displayed, no trouble code is stored.
Erasing
- Ensure ignition switched OFF.
- Wait 15 seconds minimum.
- Reconnect battery ground lead.
- Repeat checking procedure to ensure no data remains in ECM fault memory.
NOTE: Disconnecting battery ground lead may erase memory from electronic units such as radio.
