General information

Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will illuminate or flash if certain faults are recorded .
ECM operates in backup mode if sensors fail, to enable vehicle to be driven to repair shop.
Trouble codes can be displayed by the MIL or by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC).

Accessing

Start engine.
Drive vehicle until engine at normal operating temperature.
Switch ignition OFF.
If engine does not start or stalls: Continue with test.
Switch ignition ON.
Disconnect data link connector (DLC) 1 (in engine compartment) 1 [1].
Jump DLC 1 terminals 3 & 6 (blue/white and blue wires) 1 [2].
Wait 2 seconds.
Remove jump lead.
Reconnect data link connector (DLC) 1 [1] [1].
Count MIL flashes. Note trouble codes. Compare with trouble code table.
Trouble codes are displayed as follows:

o Each trouble code consists of 4 digits divided into 2 groups.
o 0.6 second flashes indicate the 2 digits of the first group [2] [A].
o A 0.6 second pause separates each flash within the first group [2] [B].
o A 0.9 second pause separates the first and second group [2] [C].
o 0.3 second flashes indicate the 2 digits of the second group [2] [D].
o A 0.3 second pause separates each flash within the second group [2] [E].
o A 2.1 second pause separates each trouble code [2] [F].
NOTE: If total number of flashes within each group is less than 10, a zero must be placed before it to complete the trouble code.
o For example: Trouble code 0403 displayed as four 0.6 second flashes, followed by three 0.3 second flashes [2].

Switch ignition OFF.
Trouble codes can also be displayed by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC) 2 or 3 [3]

Erasing

Method 1

Ensure ignition switched OFF for at least 3 seconds.
Access trouble codes.
Leave ignition switched ON.
Disconnect data link connector (DLC) 1 (in engine compartment) 1 [1].
Jump DLC 1 terminals 3 & 6 (blue/white and blue wires) 1 [2].
Wait 2 seconds.

Remove jump lead.
Reconnect data link connector (DLC) 1 [1] [1].
Trouble codes will be erased.
Switch ignition OFF.
Repeat accessing procedure to ensure no trouble codes remain in ECM fault memory.
Trouble codes can also be erased by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC) 2 or 3.

Method 2

NOTE: Disconnecting battery ground lead may cause driveabi/ity problems until the engine management system relearns basic values.

Ensure ignition switched OFF.
Disconnect battery ground cable for at least 24 hours.
Repeat accessing procedure to ensure no trouble codes remain in ECM fault memory.

NOTE: Disconnecting battery ground lead may also erase memory from electronic units, such as radio.

• Trouble codes can also be erased by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC) 2 or 3
