General information

  • Refer to the front of this manual for general test conditions, terminology, detailed descriptions of wiring faults and a general trouble shooter for electrical and mechanical faults.
  • Engine control module (ECM) incorporates self-diagnosis function.
  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will illuminate if certain faults are recorded.
  • ECM operates in backup mode if sensors fail, to enable vehicle to be driven to workshop.
  • Trouble codes can be displayed by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC) Accord [1] , CR-V/Odyssey [2] , S2000 2000-04 [3] Civic/S2000 2005- [4] or by the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with the data link connector (DLC) terminals jumped [5].

NOTE: The use of a Scan Tool is essential to obtain full diagnostic information.

Accessing

  • Ensure ignition switched OFF.
  • Jump data link connector (DLC) terminals 4 and 9 [5].
  • Switch ignition ON.
  • Check MIL is flashing.
  • Trouble codes 1-9 are indicated as follows:
o Individual short flashes display trouble code [6] [A].
o A short pause separates each flash [6] [B).
o A long pause separates each trouble code [6] [C].
o For example: Trouble code 3 displayed [6].
  • Trouble codes greater than 9 are indicated as follows:
o Long flashes indicate the ‘tens’ of the trouble code [7] [A).
o Short flashes indicate the ‘units’ of the trouble code [7] [C].
o A short pause separates each flash [7] [B).
o A long pause separates each trouble code [7] [D).
o For example: Trouble code 12 displayed [7].
  • Count MIL flashes and compare with trouble code table.

NOTE: If a trouble code is displayed but not listed in the trouble code table, suspect engine control module (ECM) fault.

  • Switch ignition OFF.
  • Remove jump lead.

Erasing – except Accord 2003 ->

  • After the faults have been rectified, trouble codes can be erased by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC) or as follows:
  • Switch ignition OFF.
  • Accord: Remove clock fuse (7.5A) from fascia fusebox for 10 seconds minimum [8]
  • Civic/CR-V: Remove ECM fuse (15A) from underhood fusebox for 10 seconds minimum [9]
  • Odyssey: Remove Clock/Back Up fuse (7.5A) from fascia fusebox for 10 seconds minimum: 1999 – [1o] or 2000-04 – [11]
  • S2000: Remove Back Up fuse (7.5A) from fascia fusebox for 60 seconds minimum [12] .
  • Reinstall fuse.
  • Repeat checking procedure to ensure no data remains in ECM fault memory.

Erasing – Accord 2003 ->

  • Trouble codes can only be erased by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC) [1].
