General information

  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will illuminate continuously if permanent faults are recorded.
  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will illuminate briefly and then switch off if intermittent faults are recorded.
  • ECM operates in backup mode if sensors fail , to enable vehicle to be driven to repair shop.
  • Trouble codes can be displayed by the MIL or by using an analogue voltmeter or Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC).

Accessing

Using malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)

  • Ensure ignition switched OFF.
  • Access data link connector (DLC) 1
  • Jump data link connector (DLC) terminals STI and GNO 2
  • Switch ignition ON .
  • Count MIL flashes. Note trouble codes. Compare with trouble code table .
o 1.2 second flashes indicate the ‘tens’ of the trouble code 3 [A).
o 0.4 second flashes indicate the ‘units’ of the trouble code 3 [C).
o A 1.6 second pause (MIL OFF) separates ‘tens’ and ‘units’ 3 [B).
o A 0.4 second pause (MIL OFF) separates each flash 3 [D).
o A 4 second pause separates each trouble code 3 [E) .
o For example: Trouble code 12 displayed D. Throttle position (TP) sensor.
  • Switch ignition OFF.
  • Trouble codes can also be displayed by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC) 1

Using analogue voltmeter

  • Ensure ignition switched OFF.
  • Access data link connector (DLC) 1
  • Connect an analogue voltmeter between data link connector (DLC) terminal STO and ground 1
  • Set analogue voltmeter to a DC voltage range of 0-20 V.
  • Jump data link connector (DLC) terminals STI and GND 4
  • Switch ignition ON.
  • Count voltmeter needle deflections. Note trouble codes. Compare with trouble code table.
o 1.2 second needle deflections indicate the ‘tens’ of the trouble code 3 [A).
o 0.4 second needle deflections indicate the ‘units’ of the trouble code 3 [C).
o A 1.6 second pause separates ‘tens’ and ‘units’ 3 [B) .
o A 0.4 second pause separates each needle deflection 3 [D).
o A 4 second pause separates each trouble code 3 [E) .
o For example: Trouble code 12 displayed 3. Throttle position (TP) sensor.
  • Switch ignition OFF.
  • Trouble codes can also be displayed by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC) 1

Erasing

  • Ensure ignition switched OFF.
  • Disconnect battery ground cable.
  • Depress brake pedal for 5-10 seconds.
  • Reconnect battery ground cable.
  • Repeat accessing procedure to ensure no trouble codes remain in ECM fault memory.
NOTE: Disconnecting battery ground lead may also erase memory from electronic units, such as radio.
