General information

  • Engine control module (ECM) incorporates self-diagnosis function.
  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will illuminate if certain faults are recorded.
  • ECM operates in backup mode if sensors fail, to enable vehicle to be driven to workshop
  • Frontier, Maxima & Quest 2000 ->/Pathfinder/ Xterra 2001 ->: Trouble codes can only be displayed by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC).
  • Except Frontier, Maxima & Quest 2000 ->I Pathfinder/Xterra 2001 ->: Trouble codes can be displayed by the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC).
o 300ZX/Frontier/Maxima 1996 ->/Quest/ Pathfinder/Xterra: 1 [1].
o Maxima ->1995: 2 [1).
NOTE: The use of a Scan Tool is essential to obtain full diagnostic information.

Accessing – Mode 1

  • Switch ignition ON.
  • Check MIL illuminates.
  • Start engine. Allow to idle.
  • If MIL extinguishes, no trouble codes have been recorded.
  • If MIL remains illuminated, access trouble codes.

Accessing – Mode 2 – except Frontier, Maxima & Quest 2000 ->/Pathfinder/ Xterra 2001 ->

  • Access engine control module (ECM):
o 300ZX [1].
o Frontier/Maxima – 3 [2].
o Quest – 2 [2].
o Pathfinder – 1 [3).
  • Switch ignition ON. Do NOT start engine.
  • Turn diagnostic mode selector on ECM fully clockwise [5].
  • Wait at least 2 seconds.
  • Turn diagnostic mode selector on ECM fully counterclockwise [5].
  • Self-diagnosis now in Mode 2.
  • MIL should flash.
  • Count flashes and compare with trouble code table.
o Long flashes indicate the ‘hundreds’ of the trouble code [6] [A].
o Short flashes indicate the ‘units’ of the trouble code [6] [C].
o A short pause separates each flash [6] [B].
o A long pause separates each trouble code [6] [D].
o For example: Trouble code 102 displayed [6].
  • Switch ignition OFF.
  • Self-diagnosis will return to Mode 1.

Accessing – Mode 2 – Frontier, Maxima Quest 2000 ->/Pathfinder/Xterra 2001->

  • Trouble codes can only be displayed by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC).

Erasing – except Frontier, Maxima & Quest 2000 ->/Pathfinder/Xterra 2001 ->

  • Trouble codes can be erased by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC) or as follows:

With the ignition switch ON and the engine control module (ECM) in diagnosis test mode 2.

Turn diagnostic mode selector on ECM fully clockwise [5]

Trouble codes are erased.

Switch ignition OFF.

Turn diagnostic mode selector on ECM fully counterclockwise [5].

Repeat checking procedure to ensure no data remains in ECM fault memory.

Erasing – Frontier, Maxima & Quest 2000 ->/Pathfinder/Xterra 2001->

  • Trouble codes can only be erased by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC).
