Accessing Trouble Codes

Checking – Key ON engine OFF test
  • Start engine.
  • Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature.
  • Switch ignition OFF.
  • Wait 10 seconds.
  • Connect an analogue voltmeter between data link connector (DLC) terminal 4 and battery (12 volt) positive Image 1
  • Jump DLC 1 terminal Image 1 [1] to DLC 2 terminal 2 Image 1 [2]
  • Switch ignition ON.
  • Count voltmeter pulses and compare with trouble code table
  1. A group of 0.5 second pulses indicate each of the 2 (1991), or 3 (1992-1994) trouble code digits Image 2 [A]
  2. A 0.5 second pause separates each pulse Image 2 [B]
  3. A 2 second pause separates each trouble code digit Image 2 [C]
  4. A 4 second pause separates each trouble code Image 2 [D]
  5. For example: Trouble code 231 displayed Image 2
B2300 & B3000 & B4000 & Navajo 2
  • When all present trouble codes have been displayed:
  1. A 6-9 second pause, followed by a 0.5 second pulse, and another 6-9 second pause, indicate the start of the memorised trouble codes
  • Trouble codes are indicated in the same manner as above
  • NOTE: Memorised trouble codes refer to faults that have occurred in the last 80 ignition key cycles.
  • Count voltmeter pulses and compare with trouble code table
  • Switch ignition OFF
  • Remove jump lead and voltmeter

  • Jump DLC 1 terminal Image 1 [1] to DLC 2 terminal 2 Image 1 [2]
  • Start engine.
  • After a group of 3 0.5 second pulses (ID code) are displayed:
  • Press and release the brake pedal
  • If after  6-20 seconds, a single 0.5 second pulse is displayed (dynamic response signal):
  • Increase engine speed sharply
  • NOTE: Do not depress throttle during the test without the dynamic response signal
  • Trouble codes are indicated in the same manner as above
  • Count voltmeter pulses and compare with trouble code table
  • Switch ignition OFF

Clearing Trouble Codes

  • Ensure ignition switched OFF
  • Connect an analogue voltmeter between data link connector (DLC) terminal 4 and battery (12 volt) positive Image 1
  • Jump DLC 1 terminal Image 1 [1] to DLC 2 terminal 2 Image 1 [2]
  • Switch ignition ON
  • When trouble codes start to be displayed:
  • Disconnect the jumper lead between DLC 1 terminal to DLC 2 terminal
  • If system components have been replaced:
  • Disconnect battery ground lead for 5 minutes to erase adaptive memory from engine control module (ECM).
  • Switch ignition OFF
  • Remove the voltmeter
  • Repeat checking procedure to ensure no data remains in ECM fault memory
