General information

  • Refer to the front of this manual for general test conditions, terminology, detailed descriptions of wiring faults and a general trouble shooter for electrical and mechanical faults.
  • Engine control module (ECM) incorporates self-diagnosis function.
  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will illuminate if certain faults are recorded.
  • ECM operates in backup mode if sensors fail, to enable vehicle to be driven to workshop.
  • Trouble codes can be displayed by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC) 1 [1], or by the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).

NOTE: The use of a Scan Tool is essential to obtain full diagnostic information.

Accessing – Mode 1

  • Switch ignition ON.
  • Check MIL illuminates.
  • Start engine. Allow to idle.
  • If MIL extinguishes, no trouble codes have been recorded.
  • If MIL remains illuminated, access trouble codes.

Accessing – Mode 2

  • Access engine control module (ECM) 1 [3].
  • Switch ignition ON. Do NOT start engine.
  • Turn diagnostic mode selector on ECM fully clockwise [2]
  • Wait at least 2 seconds.
  • Turn diagnostic mode selector on ECM fully counterclockwise [2].
  • Self-diagnosis now in Mode 2.
  • MIL should flash.
  • Count flashes and compare with trouble code table.
  • Each trouble code consists of four groups of one or more flashes.
  • The first group of flashes indicate the ‘thousands’ of the trouble code [3] [A].
  • The second group of flashes indicate the ‘hundreds’ of the trouble code [3] [B].
  • The third group of flashes indicate the ‘tens’ of the trouble code [3] [C].
  • The fourth group of flashes indicate the ‘units’ of the trouble code [3] [D].
  • Ten flashes in a group indicate ‘0’.
  • A short pause separates each trouble code group D [E].
  • A long pause separates each trouble code D [F].
  • For example: Trouble code P1130 displayed U
  • Switch ignition OFF.
  • Self-diagnosis will return to Mode 1.

Erasing

  • Trouble codes can be erased by using a Scan Tool connected to the data link connector (DLC) or as follows:
  • With the ignition switch ON and the engine control module (ECM) in diagnosis test mode 2.
  • Turn diagnostic mode selector on ECM fully clockwise [2]
  • Trouble codes are erased.
  • Switch ignition OFF.
  • Turn diagnostic mode selector on ECM fully counterclockwise [2].
  • Repeat checking procedure to ensure no data remains in ECM fault memory.
