Fuel Injector Driver Reset

A fuel injector driver reset is seen mostly on vehicles equipped with the 2.8L or 3.1L multi-port engines

It usually occurs when the vehicle is driven for a period of time and the engine is at its upper most temperature. Then the engine suddenly dies and will not restart. Sometimes the engine will start and run until the key is released from the crank position and is at the run position.

Another hint that a vehicle is experiencing this kind of reset is that once the engine is fully cooled it will operate normally but fails again when its temperature rises.

The reset is most likely occurring due to a failure of fuel injector(s) that are shorting internally, and this usually occurs at very warm engine temperatures. This overloads the fuel injector driver causing it to limit its current flow.

A test for this problem is taking a resistance reading of the fuel injectors while the engine isn’t starting.

The following information chart is built from notes from my hand written notebook and like a dummy I didn’t indicate any certain year models.

On front wheel drive models except Lumina you can do the check by disconnecting the injector four-wire harness connector and check the resistance between the terminals shown in the above chart.

On Lumina open the black “mini-harness” connector and take the resistance readings there.
NOTE:
You are checking the resistance of three 12.6-ohm injectors in a parallel circuit, so the normal resistance reading for each bank should be approximately 4.0-ohms. If it’s below this value, you have an injector problem on the cylinder bank where the resistance was shown as low.
Armed with a good digital multi-meter and the proper information Check ALLDATA  for your vehicle you can test the injectors with-out removing the intake plenum.
