So You Have an EGR Trouble Code,
What Does it Mean?

By Tony, BAT Auto Technical

You are having some troubles with your vehicle and are able to retrieve the trouble codes. You pull an EGR code, now what?

Before starting on the diagnostics, general checks should be made;

We'll attempt at helping to clear up some confusion on the EGR code. This flowchart and diagram are for a GM V-6, other vehicels may be different, but this is a basic setup.

The ECM is programmed with an EGR diagnostic check to monitor flow through each individual valve in the three solenoid EGR valves.
When the vehicle is in the decel mode with the valves normally closed, the ECM opens each valve in succession (while keeping previous valves open) and manifold pressure is monitored for an appropriate increase associated with each valve's application. Should the calibrated response in manifold pressure not be seen by the ECM, a DTC 32 will set.

Starting with the Flowchart, you can see it starts off with asking about the trouble code.

Ok, you have confirmed the trouble code. Now it starts to ask about testing.

You can see that a test light is required and it tells you how to check certain curcuits.

Now, the diagnostics splits the tree and can go in different directions. If the light is on, then it heads off in one direction. If the light is off, then it goes in another direction.

Now, we come down to the cause.As you can see, the cause can be from a couple things.

  • A faulty Egr
  • A faulty ECM
  • An open or broken circuit

The diagram shows the connections and circuits that require testing. This happens to be a digital EGR circuit and shows the plug ins, the connections and even the connector color.
Each terminal is marked with the number of the circuit and the color of the wire. Each one that is on the flowchart is marked on the diagram.
